SD ARE INDEED BUYERS!

..............................................................................................................................................................................

We've reached the point in the season where we begin to distinguish the "buyers" from the "sellers". You know, the teams who feel they have a legit shot at the playoffs, and will make any move necessary to obtain that goal.. as supposed to the teams that realize they have no shot, and will move any veteran to pick up that key prospect for later on down the road.

The San Diego Padres are one team that are clearly "buyers", especially going by their recent flurry of moves.

In their first move which went down a couple hours ago, they obtained all-star SP Bartolo Acosta from the Santa Cruz Sequoias, in exchange for ML P Bobby Ray Moore. Acosta will provide another live arm to add in the Padre rotation. Santa Cruz will gladly accept some salary relief in exchange.

In a separate deal made a few hours later with the same club, the Padres picked up Jerry Strong, in exchange for ML IFs Davey Mercado and Welington Reyes. Strong is clearly on the downside of his career, but he can still deliver a live bat into that Padre lineup.

Here's what San Diego owner mumcoach said on the latest moves...

"We're excited to upgrade the ML bench for the division race. Strong will be an improved pinch hitting and corner OF option. Acosta provides a much needed long relief out of the bullpen and may push for a spot in the rotation."

Pending league approval of the trades, San Diego should expect the arrival of Acosta and Strong to the San Diego area within a couple days.
