Cincinnati (OH)
Whenever there is a no-hitter in Shoeless Joe, it tends to be a huge headline within the league. Combined no-hitters, no so much. Why? Not really sure, but we had a perfect example of that this past week. In the 3/21/11 PM cycle game, the Cincinnati Blue Darters hosted the New York Nippers. The Nippers' Rene Howry was facing off against the Blue Darters' Aaron Leach.
It was an uneventful game for a little while. A bloop double by Ewell Bierbrodt and an RBI single by Casey Combs was all the scoring the Nippers needed. Final score: Nippers 2, Blue Darters 0. However, there's something a little more important that needs to be addressed. The Nippers threw a combined no-hitter, as Howry, Luis Esposito, and Buddy Bagwell all contributed to the victory.
Howry began the contest with 6 no-hit innings, walking three and striking out six. Esposito entered the game and added two perfect innings of his own. Bagwell entered in the 9th inning and pitched one innings, walking one, striking out one, and earning his 14th save of the season.
