A FLURRY OF IFA ACTIVITY

..............................................................................................................................................................................

It's very uncommon to see a large number of decent International Free Agents available for sign so early. Some teams got some major talent, and even some got them at a good price. Here's the weekly recap:

PEDRO AVILA, CHI

The Chicago Rooftops got a major player when they agreed with Pedro Avila to a contract. He's has the potential to be an all-star SP once he matures. He's only 18 now, so he has tons of time to go.

MARK MASAOKA, TEX

New Texas owner wafairb didn't waste any time adding minor league talent to his franchise by signing Mark Masaoka to a contract. I can see Masaoka anchoring the TEX rotation for years to come. Two great pitches and outstanding velocity.

EMILIO ORTIZ, ARI

Add Arizona to the list of clubs who added a potential ace to their farm club. Emilio Ortiz doesn't have the velocity that Masaoka has, but he has an impressive selection of pitches which should make him fairly successful at the ML level.

FU-TE KWON, KC

Finally, a non-pitcher. KC got good value signing Fu-Te Kwon to a contract. Spending a bonus of only 5.0M, KC added a player with an above average bat and glove, and they still have money to sign even more later on down the road.

WILLIE CRUZ, ATL

Atlanta was able to get Willie Cruz with only a 3.8M bonus. He's listed as a SS, but lacks the range to play there full time. He'd be a more than adequate 3B with a decent bat.
